Domain names are the backbone of every business. Why? Because a
good domain name can be found easily in the search engines, goes
up in value, and can be sold with or without a business. If you
confused as to what a domain is it’s simply a website address.
For example the domain name for my website is
www.MiamiInternetMarketing.com.
No matter what business you own you will always want to get the
generic domain name for it. If your a local business then you will
want to get the city name and then the generic name for your
industry. For example if you were a dentist and practiced in Miami
then you would ideally want to get the domain name MiamiDentist.com.
Most good domain names are already taken as there are many investors
who buy them to sell later on or a business may already have bought
the name.
The best thing about generic domain names is that they are what people
naturally search for. If you lived in Coral Gables, Florida and were
looking for a plumber most people go to Google and type in the search
bar “Coral Gable Plumber.” That is the natural way people search for
local service providers or goods on the Internet.
They don’t search by person name because if they knew someone who
was already a plumber then they would call them directly. They don’t
know a plumber and they live in a specific city so they type in
city name and then the keywords they are looking for.
By having the generic keywords in your domain name it also makes it
easier to get higher placement, hopefully #1 on Google, for your
website. This of course brings you more traffic.
The two best things about having a generic domain name is you appear
as the designated expert in your field because you own the generic
domain name. If you owned Vodka.com for instance then you would
naturally appear as the #1 Vodka brand because you own the generic
domain name. The same goes for geographic location. If you owned
MiamiPlasticSurgeon.com then you by default look like the authority
figure by reason of owning the generic domain.
The second best thing about generic domain names is the exit strategy.
If you owned MikeWilliamsDentist.com and wanted to sell your business
and retire your entire website and domain and virtually worthless to
a potential buyer. This gives you less selling power. However, if
you owned MiamiDentist.com where Mike Williams has his dental practice
then you can easily see how much more valuable your business is because
you own the generic domain name and are probably #1 on Google when
people search for a Miami Dentist.
So when you start a business be sure to try and obtain the generic
domain name pertaining to your business because in the end it will
pay for itself many times over. People naturally search for it, it
ranks higher in the search engines, you have natural authority, and
the exit strategy is much more profitable.
